She Did That!
Introducing: Zelda Wynn Valdes (1905-2001), designer, seamstress, and certified taste-maker of mid-century American fashion.
Valdes first made history in 1948 when she opened her boutique, Chez Valdes, the first black-owned store on Manhattan’s Broadway Avenue. Known for her curvaceous designs, this legend didn’t stop there.
1950s - Played a critical role in literally defining the body-hugging cabaret-style, personally dressing stars like Eartha Kitt, Ruby Dee, Marlene Dietrich, and Ella Fitzgerald.
1960s - Recognized and personally commissioned by Hugh Hefner to design a signature look (yes, she literally invented the Playboy bunny suit)
1970s - Served as the Head Costume Designer for the Dance Theatre of Harlem
In the spirit of her iconic, head-turning aesthetic, we honor her with the Zelda Coat.
